Iran says the remarks made by top US commander David Petraeus against Tehran obviously contradict President Barack Obama's alleged approach.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hassan Qashqavi, also blamed "the US's unilateralism, its militaristic approach and the occupation of Iraq" for insecurity in the war-torn country.

General Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan told a conference held in Qatar last week, that Iran continues to train and equip militants in Iraq.

He also accused the Islamic Republic of assisting Taliban insurgents.

Qashqavi, however, said the remarks were in stark contrast with Obama's overture to the Iranian government.

The US President has vowed to begin talks with Iran to thaw relations between the two countries.

The Iranian diplomat said the international community has not forgotten the United States had contributed to the establishment of al-Qaeda and its supporters.

He also slammed the presence of foreign forces for the increase in the production of narcotics in Afghanistan.

Qashqavi said Iran's policy has been based on supporting the democratically elected government of Iraq.
